Curtis Frederick was born in Dallas and raised in Mesquite for most of his young life. He has lived in Rockwall since 2004, where he owns a landscape business. The love of art started for him at a very young age. As with many young artists, drawing was the first thing he was introduced to and could do well. It was not until college that he discovered clay. He states, “For me three dimensional designs were something I could create in a fully immersed way. It is a challenge to make sure that each “side” engages the viewer. Being somewhat of a rebel, I tried to push the envelope on the finishes of my clay pieces.”
This is something that continues with his philosophy of art. “Art to me is a lengthy process, a journey through materials and life. I do not ever want to get stuck in one medium, concept or style, but rather let the material be approached by what needs to be created.” Curtis believes some of his best work comes from imperfections, unplanned events, and through experimentation. He not only does ceramic sculptures, but has added stone, plaster, 3D printing, wood, and steel to his list of mediums for his sculptures. He is very excited to start mixing and matching all these types of mediums together.
Curtis is an award-winning artist that has exhibited across the United Sates and recently sold a large sculpture to the State of New Mexico, Art in Public Places.
