I locked myself in my bedroom in the third grade and told my family I wouldn’t be leaving. I had decided I would just stay there and ART. I had a wooden ACE HARDWARE pine ladder that I had painted a beautiful butter yellow. It was important. It was my easel for works in progress, it was my display shelves for completed art, and on the top sat a yellow ceramic pot with a variegated philodendron plant that trellised down the ladder, to the floor and back up to my four-poster bed. I had a studio; complete with paints and brushes, a large bucket of water and several canvases. I decided I wasn’t leaving and made my announcement to that effect.
About 60 years later and I’d still rather be arting … most days. As a child, I created my artist’s signature, it is the same signature I use today decades later. My medium of choice changes with my mood and my stage in life and fluctuates sometimes within a day. I have created in nearly all the needle arts, I’m a quilter, and smocker, embroiderer, weaver and then some. I like to paint in watercolor and acrylic and I like to use colored pencils and oil pastels. I like college and the possibilities it provides for blending materials. Mostly, I like to mix several mediums together and usually combine those that are rarely mixed together. The juxtaposition of mediums creating texture changes, or color combinations, or materials working collaboration the in a composition are what I enjoy creating the most.
